Christians in Hell

Do you think that there are or will be Christians in Hell? It’s a strange thought but worth considering. Many people call themselves “Christians” and for many reasons. Some do so because they attend a Christian church or come from a Christian family. Some say that to “follow Jesus” is to be a Christian. But what does following Jesus mean? Many believe that Jesus was a perfect human being having never committed even one sin. The Bible also declares that as a fact. So, when we “follow Jesus” does that mean that we don’t sin either? If we are honest with ourselves we know that is not possible. No matter how hard we try, we still fail and sin sometimes.

Some say we need to “give our lives to the Lord” and in doing that we are then a Christian. We have given up our lives and living for ourselves and instead are living for Jesus and doing good works as He did. In other words, we sacrifice our lives for Him. We make Him Lord and not ourselves. Then, this giving over of our lives to Jesus is what makes us a Christian.

While these many approaches to living a life in a way that we think makes God happy with us are what makes us Christians, that’s not really what actually matters to God. These attempts at being Christian are all based upon things that we do. But the Bible tells us that God considers the things we do, even though they might be good, are actually not good enough to earn salvation and Heaven for eternity. The Bible states clearly that it is ONLY what Jesus Christ has done that matters when it comes to our salvation and our eternal destiny.

So, being a Christian is no guarantee of eternal life. Being a Christian is no better than being a Buddhist or a Muslim or a Scientologist if what you are focusing on is your behavior or good works in that religion. Many Christians are basing their eternal destiny on what they themselves have done or are doing for God instead of what the Bible tells us about the matter. When a Christian says “when I was 10 years old I gave my life to Christ”, or “I repented of my sins and made Jesus lord of my life”, or “I walked the aisle and was baptized”, or “I decided to follow Jesus and live the best life I possibly could”… they are not glorifying God and place no emphasis on what Christ accomplished for us on the cross of Calvary.

The true gospel is not about “what can I do for God?” It is, instead all about what God, in Christ has done for us. God tells us what he did for all mankind in the Bible. When we believe it, we are saved from all our sins and have eternal life and will live forever in Heaven with God.

But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. Romans4:5

So being a Christian is no guarantee of avoiding Hell. Only believing what God tells us that He has accomplished for us will get us into Heaven. There are many Bible-believing Christians that will make Heaven their eternal home but there are also many Christians that do not know what the Bible tells us about salvation and instead of trusting the word of God in that regard are placing their hope in what their denomination tells them is necessary. The key is to make God’s Word your one an only final authority.
