The Bible
Apart from Christ’s death on the cross of Calvary I don’t know of a more important gift to mankind than when God gave us his word. God’s word is the Bible. In the Bible God says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1 Since according to this verse, the very words of God are actually God Himself, the word “Word” is capitalized as a proper noun just like “God” or “Jesus” or “Holy Spirit”. That same Word is said to have taken on human form and lived among us. “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” John 1:14 So that tells us that Jesus Christ was that Word. It’s pretty amazing to think that God’s Word always was and at one point became a man that lived on earth. Then later, God compiled a book that contains His Word and gave that to us so that we can understand exactly what He wants us to know. In 1st Corinthians, 2:16 the Apostle Paul says this…“For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ”. Fascinating. When we hold a Bible in our hands we are holding God himself in written form which includes the very mind of Jesus Christ. What a treasure we have from our loving Father. He has not left us without guidance. He has provided us with everything we need to come to know and understand Him.
As a believer in Jesus Christ and the salvation He has provided, I consider the Bible to be my final authority. I listen to a lot of people speak and have read a lot of books on the subjects of God and faith and eternity and have come up with many opinions. When I am not sure about a particular viewpoint, I search the Bible to see what God has said about it before I decide what I believe. I have changed my mind on some long-held beliefs in doing this because I see something different in the Bible than what I had been taught or thought I believed.
Some people find it hard to believe that God could give us the Bible. Even though they admit that it seems apparent that God created the earth and placed mankind on it. I think giving us the Bible is no less possible for God than for giving us the earth and the galaxies and everything we see around us. These are all incredible miracles and so is the gift of the Bible. I think that if God could use a man (Jesus Christ) to create a way of forgiving us of our sins, he could also make use of man to compile a book that would inform us all about it. And not only could God provide us with a book that would present his mind to us all, he could also make that book perfect. Just like himself, the book is perfect and without error. I believe that book to be the King James Bible. The book that has been used of God for hundreds of years to bring sinners to saving faith. Once man no longer believed that God could give us a perfect guidebook he started finding “mistakes” in it and then began the never-ending search for “the original” even though none of the original manuscripts that were written by the hand of God through holy men even exist any longer. The idea that the Bible has errors in it and that we need to search for the original only serves to make people doubt and no longer have complete faith in the Word of God. Instead of studying the Bible to better understand God’s will for our lives, time is spent studying the authenticity of what we proclaim is our final authority. I take by faith that God has given us His perfect word and has also preserved it perfect for us.
